She won't say it out loud.
But I catch the sideways glances. The nearly imperceptible head shakes. The raised eyebrows.
I don't have a problem.
I can quit any time.
Besides, the choice is already being made for me.
There's hardly an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit that I haven't seen. Eventually, I'll have to quit watching.
But for now:
Every night, our routine is the same.
We crawl into bed and April reaches for Newsweek while I scramble to turn on the TV and grab the TIVO control.
I already know, before I even get into bed, that there will be 6-7 episodes of Law & Order saved on our digital recorder. This knowledge prompts me (on a regular basis) to thank the TV Gods for the show's long run and USA network for airing it nearly non-stop.
Every show starts with the same introduction. And even though it causes April to roll her eyes at me, I deepen my voice and say along with the TV:
In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories....DUH DUH!
Within seconds of the story unfolding, I'll know if I've seen the particular episode. If I've seen it, I delete it and go to the next recorded episode.
Repeat cycle (including the whole introduction bit).
Seen it? Delete it. On to the next episode.
Repeat cycle.
Cue April's sideways glances and raised eyebrows.
"WHAT?"
"Nothing," she'll say, burying her nose back in her magazine.
My love for the show is matched only by my love for Mariska Hargitay. Dear Lord.

The moment she fills my screen, I yell:
"SHE'S HOT!"
"Mhmmm."
"Seriously, Apes. You know if Mariska ever wanted to 'get with me,' I'll have to do it right? I mean, you'd understand. It's YOU I love, but I couldn't deny Mariska if the opportunity presented itself..."
"Mhmmm. If Mariska Hargitay, who is happily married and the mother of a young son, ever wants to 'get with you,' feel free."
"You don't think it'll ever happen, do you? Nice. Way to kill my dreams. I thought you promised to always be supportive."
"Mhmmm."
Hurmph.
Whatever.
I know the truth. One day Mariska and I will meet and April will see that all my stalking - scratch that, I mean viewing - will have paid off.
Until then, I'll have to scour my TIVO and hope to catch at least ONE episode I haven't seen before...

What a great post...love it...and I really wish we had TIVO here so I could get all the marathon's and delete it if I saw it. OMG that sounds like a dream come true! I am still using VHS tapes...LOL
Taylor, I'm telling you, TIVO is better than crack (so I've heard). I'm so addicted that I've even considered smoking the remote control just to see if it makes my viewing experience richer.
I'm engagged to my TiVo.
When she had the short hair in the early episodes was when I really drooled over her. She is still droolworthy, but those early years were the best.
Sarat and I ushered in the New Year this past January with an SVU marathon. Eight straight hours of deviant behavior. No wonder 2007 still seems kind of...wrong. :) And am I the only one who is happy ICE-T sill has a career? (My first blog post ever! And I got to mention ICE-T! Awesome!)
It's not something I watch but I know the feeling. I am addicted to Friends (yes, I know, compared to SVU it's VERY light and fluffy!)and thank god that E4 show all the series on a repeat cycle from start to finish - even though I know within seconds what's going to happen in each episode!
e-babe: i give you my blessings. I know that will be a union full of blissful-ness.
hoo hoo: (i love writing that) - mhmm! i need a cold shower.
SUZI!: how stoked am I that you got an account! Please refer all future comments to me for approval first (I KNOW you...) And yes, i do love that you got to reference ICE-T in your first comment. Love you long time.
alcoment: so relieved to know i'm not alone...whew. :)
You're going to have to fight me for Mariska...funny thing is, I couldn't stand her when she was on ER. Something about her strong personality on SVU...mmmm...
Oh and Tivo is like the best invention ever.
debra - i'm not much of a fighter, but i would THROW DOWN for Mariska. Just so you know...and if there were a fire, my tivo would make the first round of personal items saved. right after april and the dogs.
is this mariska "get with you" situation up there with the scarlett johansson "get with you" situation? i mean, are they equal, or will you have to choose between the two when the time comes? you know they are going to find out who you are and want to get with you at the same time...that's just how it works out.
my 2nd loves are southpark and family guy. i do the same thing. i have them all set to record. when they start, i go through the entire theme song, and if i've seen it - DELETE, go back to the next, and start all over with the theme songs. i get the rolling of the eyes and shaking of the head...but it doesn't deter me from repeating!
I know exactly what you mean and she is as sweet as Benson is tough. Thank goodness I had restraint and didn't jump all over her ;-)
Alas, there is no TIVO or DVR in France. At least not in this apartment. I miss it. I can still hear that SVU intro, with the music, duhn-duhn.
Linds: should mariska and scarlett j. find themselves fighting over me at the same time, i'll assure them there is enough of me to go around. i feel confident i can handle it :) and I LOVE south park. especially butters!
mariska_crazy: you've MET HER?! oh my god. please tell me!!!
omyword: best intro EVER. EVER. i hear it in my sleep....
Yes I did! I met her last December at Bloomingdales when she had an autograph signing for her Joyful Heart Foundation. She is very beautiful, funny, down to earth and she was giving out hugs (if only she was giving out some kisses *sigh*) :-( to anyone who asked. She posed for pictures with anyone who wanted them and spent time with each fan who wanted to talk. I was so tongue tied I could barely even say anything to her:-P
